Irvin “Sonny” Adam Horst, Jr.

A Lover and Collector of Trains -

Irvin “Sonny” Adam Horst, Jr., age 81, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017.  Sonny was born on Tuesday, January 21, 1936 in Mechanicsburg to the late Irvin Adam Horst, Sr. and Bernice Romaine (Ebert) Horst.  In addition to his parents, Sonny is preceded in death by his brother, Lynford Ebert.

Sonny’s survivors include his two loving sisters: Joan Thumma and her husband, Elmer, of Shermans Dale; Edith Mae Brown of Mechanicsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Sonny graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1955.  He retired from the Book of the Month Club in Mechanicsburg, after almost 30 years of service working as a forklift operator.  Sonny was a member of the Train Collector’s Association for over 50 years.  He was an honor member of the Washington Fire Company Fire Company No. 1, which he joined in 1954.  Sonny loved trains and started collecting models of them at a very young age.  He enjoyed traveling to see different locomotives all over with his friends.  When it was still open, Sonny used to love going to Little Richard’s Restaurant in the East Gate Plaza in Mechanicsburg.  Even though Sonny was very well liked, he often enjoyed doing his own thing while spending time at home and sitting outside feeding the birds and squirrels.

Sonny’s family will be remembering his life privately.  Interment in Westminster Cemetery in Carlisle will be at the family’s convenience.  Cremation was private.

Sonny’s family has entrusted his care to Myers – Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421.  Read Sonny’s full obituary and sign his official guest book at

I was sorry to read Irvin's obituary. I would see him from time to time, often at the post office, and he always had a smile and a pleasant "hello". It's hard to lose classmates. My sympathy to Joan and all of the family.
