Richard “Dick” Harold Cekovich

An Avid Hunter and Outdoorsman -

Richard “Dick” Harold Cekovich, age 82, of Mechanicsburg, was embraced by his loving family in Heaven on Saturday, June 10, 2017.  Dick was born on Thursday, May 16, 1935 in Mechanicsburg to the late John Cekovich and Ruth Anna (O’Hara) Cekovich.  In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his son, Richard “Rick” D. Cekovich.

Dick’s survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie Irene (Moyles) Cekovich; his four children: Ronald “Ron” Cekovich and his fiance, Elaine Berry, of Hagerstown, MD, Ruth Fritz and her husband, Jerry, III, of Mechanicsburg, Linda Groff and her husband, Ron, of Mechanicsburg, Cindy Kio and her husband, Doug, of Austin, PA; his daughter-in-law, Tammy Cekovich of Mechanicsburg, PA; his 12 grandchildren; his 22 great-grandchildren; his three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dick graduated from Mechanicsburg High School where he played football and was a star competitor.  Later in life he played semi-pro football for the Cumberland Colts.  He chose to join the United States Air Force and proudly served for many years while traveling all over the globe.  Dick retired from the Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg in 1987, after many years of service completing his career as a computer programmer.  He was a lifelong member of Young’s United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg.  Dick was a member of the Mechanicsburg Sportsmen’s Association where he was very active for many years.   He was an avid trap shooter and he and his team received numerous recognitions.  Dick loved both hunting and the outdoors.  He owned a small gun business that highly promoted Ruger Firearms for the last 40 years and did so long before the company was popular.  Dick enjoyed going to his camp in Potter County with his family and spending time with all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He will be missed dearly by his whole family and all of his friends.

All are welcome to join Dick’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Young’s United Methodist Church, 7075 Wertzville Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050; with Pastor Robert V. Bishard, Jr. officiating.  Dick’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the service.

Burial will follow on Monday, June 19, 2017 in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.

So very sorry to hear of Dick's passing. My deepest condolences to the family. I spent many a happy hour shooting the breeze with Dick in his shop. His patented "Heeeello" when he answered the shop phone will never be duplicated or forgotten! Rest in peace my friend, and give my regards to Bill Ruger. I'm certain that many stories are being swapped around an eternal campfire tonight!

I have memories of Uncle Dick telling me jokes and keeping me awake all night with his fun and laughter. He was a very special Uncle. My heart is with all the family at this very difficult time. Loves to Aunt Marj and whole family.

My sincere condolences to all of the Cekovich family. I know you all will miss my friend Dick. I certainly will miss him. Dick was always a friend I could trust, put a smile on my face, count on and teach me something new. He maybe the only person I liked to call me Chuckey. Not sure if he liked being called Dickey.
God's speed Dickey.

I will miss my best friend, but he is in a better place with no pain or worries and with a ton of his friends and Rick.
Our travels together will always be a great fun memory to me to help take the sadness from my heart, he comforted me when I needed it most right after my wife of 50 years passed away last year so he was my true friend, miss you buddy

I, too, will miss Dick. He was one of the funniest and most unique people I have ever met. I enjoyed spending time talking with him at the Mechanicsburg Sportsmen's club, not to mention the education I received while visiting him in the shop. He will surely be missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and many friends at this time and always.
