Full History

The history of Buhrig Funeral & Cremation can be traced back to 1910, when the Myers Funeral Home was founded and operated by the Myers family for more than 100 years. S. Harper Myers began the business after attending the Eckels College of Embalming and Sanitary Science in Philadelphia, where he was declared a master of the art of Embalming and of Sanitary Science. Eckels College was run by relatives of the late Mabel Eckels, who owned the Eckels Drug Store & Ice Cream Parlor located across the street from the funeral home.

In 1936, Harper was joined by his two sons, Martin L. Myers and Charles L. Myers. Martin remained in Mechanicsburg with his father while Charles opened a funeral home in Camp Hill. In 1958, the third generation, Boyd L. Myers, Sr., joined his father and grandfather. The firm was purchased by Martin in the early 1960s, and when he retired in 1977 it was purchased by Boyd Sr., who owned the firm until his death in 2009.

In April 2011, Robert "Bob" Buhrig, Jr. was reacquainted with the firm, purchased the funeral home building, vehicles, and physical assets from Boyd Sr.’s widow, and began a new business – the Myers-Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, Ltd. Bob committed himself to providing the very best service to

families in the community. At the opening of the new business, Bob unveiled the only West Shore-owned and operated crematory, ensuring loved ones never leave the watchful care of Myers-Buhrig’s team.

Over the years, the name was changed to Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, and Buhrig's Gathering Place, a celebration center and restaurant, was unveiled next door. In addition to creating more parking and monument service space, the Gathering Place expanded reception options.

Throughout the years, the facilities have undergone dramatic improvements and upgrades. In late 2015 through early 2016, Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory engaged nationally-branded interior designer Carol Kemery and her Mechanicsburg-based business, Caromal Colours, for a complete remodel.

Since establishing Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory and Buhrig's Gathering Place, Bob Buhrig’s vision of grounded growth has reconnected the business to the local Mechanicsburg community. He has developed a culture of compassion by hiring and training team members who share his vision of caring for people in their time of need and walking with them on the journey of grief.

In 2023, in an effort to continue providing families with the highest levels of care now and far into the future, Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory and Buhrig's Gathering Place was purchased by Vertin, and the funeral home became known as Buhrig Funeral & Cremation. Vertin is a Midwest company that has been providing funeral services to families and supporting local communities for well over a hundred years. Under the continued leadership of Bob Buhrig, the compassionate team at Buhrig Funeral & Cremation remains committed to serving Mechanicsburg and the surrounding area.
