Planning Ahead

There are many reasons why planning ahead is a wise decision emotionally, financially, and practically.

The loss of a loved one is deeply difficult for families. Following the death of a loved one, a funeral provides much needed closure and begins healing for those left behind.

When a person has not planned ahead, families are left to guess what their loved one would have wanted and bear the burden of the planning, both financially and emotionally. Working with a good funeral director helps to relieve some of this pressure, but planning ahead does even more so.

While it may feel a bit morbid to think of your own mortality, it is a very wise and kind thing to do for your family. Planning ahead gives your family the peace of mind that they are doing what you wanted. It saves your family money by working through a prefunded arrangement and preventing emotional spending. Planning ahead also relieves your family of making significant decisions that can feel overwhelming or be divisive at times. It is one of the best investments you can make to protect and show love to your family.

Preplanning with Myers-Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory is provided at no cost. You can expect a 15 minute comfortable conversation with Funeral Director Bob Buhrig to help identify what is important to you. It is quick, simple, and hassle-free. You can also go into greater depth too, if you choose to do so.

Preplanning can include prefunding, which involves paying for your services in advance. This is helpful for families because it freezes pricing and avoids the cost of inflation in services and products. Prefunding plans made with Myers-Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory are also transferable to other funeral homes should you decide to move.

In summary, families that plan arrangements following their loved one’s passing generally experience more financial and emotional stress during one of the most difficult time of their lives.

However, preplanning allows you to:

  • Plan individually or as a family, rather than planning alone (after the loved one has passed)
  • Prepare arrangements ahead of time so your family does not have to in their time of grief
  • Express your wishes for funeral preferences and ensure they are well-documented and carried out
  • Help control costs and reduce emotional overspending
  • Personalize your plan to reflect your personality

As you think about preplanning, some of the first questions we discuss in our meetings include the Five Critical Questions. You are welcome to read through them to begin thinking about your plans.
