Barbara Elaine Starks

June 6, 1943 — April 27, 2026

Mechanicsburg

Barbara Elaine (Burrey) Starks, age 82, of Mechanicsburg passed away at home and surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 27, 2026. Barbara was born on Sunday, June 6, 1943, in Lewisburg to the late William C. Burrey, Jr. and Beatrice Bertell (Rarig) Burrey. Barbara was the widow of Douglas Allen Starks, whom she married on August 2, 1962, and who died on December 24, 2000. In addition to her parents and husband, Barbara is preceded in death by her brother: William Burrey III.

Barbara’s survivors include her two daughters: Sherry Starks of Mechanicsburg and Melanie Priar and husband, Chris, of Lewisberry; her four grandchildren: Amanda DeStephano, Jenna DeStephano, Tyler Thomas, and Zack Thomas; her five great-grandchildren: Nevaeh McClucas, Dominic McClucas, Grayson Caraway, Malachi Brock and Jaxon Thomas; her sister: Bonnie Dailey and husband James, of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara graduated from Milton High School as part of the class of 1961. She retired from Naval Inventory Control Point in Mechanicsburg, after many years of service working as an Inventory Management Specialist. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Shiremanstown, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women's Society. Barbara was a woman who truly lived for her family. She was the heart and soul of many cherished moments, especially those spent watching over her grandchildren. Her love knew no bounds, and she found immense joy in nurturing and supporting them through every stage of their lives. A passionate adventurer at heart, Barbara delighted in spontaneous journeys. She and her family often packed up at a moment's notice to travel to state parks where they camped under the stars, creating beautiful memories in the great outdoors. Her favorite retreats included the sandy beaches of Ocean City, Maryland — a place where laughter mingled with the sound of waves, and her spirit found peace and happiness. Beyond her role as a devoted family matriarch, Barbara was a compassionate soul committed to serving others. For many years, she volunteered diligently at Mission Central, embodying the kindness and generosity that were central to her character. Her selflessness in giving her time and love to those in need left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

All are welcome to join Barbara’s family at her gathering of family and friends on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to until the Celebration of Life Service beginning at 11:00 a.m. all at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Simpson Ferry Road, Shiremanstown, PA; with Pastor Jason D. Weirich officiating.  Barbara’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the church immediately following the service.
