Dean L. Hornberger, aged 87, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025. Born on February 8, 1938, in White Deer, Pennsylvania, Dean's journey through life was marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep sense of community.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Dean embodied the values of service and commitment. He retired in 2000 from Norfolk Southern, where he worked in the Maintenance and Ways division. Known for instilling the value of hard work, Dean will be remembered for his quiet demeanor and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Dean's educational background includes a diploma from Lemoyne High School. He was an excellent home painter and enjoyed staying busy through odd jobs, as well as pursuing hobbies such as reading, small game hunting, and being an avid enthusiast of World War II and Western movies. He loved animals dearly, often caring for dogs and dog-sitting for his children's pets.
His faith was an integral part of his life; he was a longtime member and usher at Trindle Spring Lutheran Church, where he made many cherished connections within the community.
Dean is preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy Louise Hornberger, and his parents Samuel and Ruth Hornberger. He is survived by his children Heidi (Donald) Milbrand of Bristol, NH and Eric Hornberger, of Mechanicsburg, and his grandchildren Abigail (Joshua) Rich and Jacob Hornberger. He is also survived by his siblings Carlene Fetcho (of Staurt, FL), and Barry Hornberger (of Mechanicsburg). A host of nieces and nephews.
Dean L. Hornberger's life was a testament to hard work, kindness, and community spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him and were touched by his unwavering dedication to family and friends.
A viewing will be held on December 11, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Trindle Spring Lutheran Church, located at 14 State Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 AM, with a graveside service at Trindle Spring Cemetery commencing at 12:15 PM. A reception will conclude the day's observances at the church at 12:45 PM.
