Dorothy Marian (Houston) Makar

Dorothy Marian (Houston) Makar, age 100, of Boiling Springs, died on Monday, November 3, 2025. Dorothy was born on Saturday, December 20, 1924, in Plainfield, NJ to the late Stanley Samuel Houston and Maude Evelyn (Kitchen) Houston. Dorothy was the widow of Harry Michael Makar, whom she married on August 17, 1952, and who died in 1988. In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy is preceded in death by her son: Robert Vincent Makar; and her three siblings: Jean Houston, Helen Houston, and Bill Houston.

Dorothy’s survivors include her daughter: Karen Quinn of New Jersey; her daughter-in-law Annette Makar; seven grandchildren: Tamala Murphy and her husband Brian, Robert Makar, Jobe Makar and his wife Kelly MacAvoy, Patrick Makar, Kelly Wolff, Ryan Wolff, George Wolff, and her former grandson-in-law Robert Geiger; her five great grandchildren: Eden Rodriguez, Kyrie Makar, Sunny Quinn, Brandon Geiger, Brian Geiger; and her brother: Herb Houston.

Dorothy was an avid reader and could often be found with her nose in a book. She loved brain games like puzzles, word searches, and crosswords. Dorothy was a great artist, and was creative with painting, sewing, and crafting. Most of all, she cherished her time with her family. Dorothy will be dearly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known her.

Dorothy’s family will be remembering her life privately. Interment will be at the family’s convenience. Cremation was private.
