Edward “Eddie” Thomas Durkin
A Kind and Loving Husband -
Edward “Eddie” Thomas Durkin, age 92, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Dillsburg, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 4, 2020. Eddie was born on Thursday, May 3, 1928, in New York, New York, to the late Edward Joseph Durkin and Catherine Alice (Bates) Durkin. In addition to his parents, Eddie is preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Durkin; his grandson, Joshua Durkin; and his three siblings: Patrick Durkin, Catherine Ryan and Lorraine Savino.
Eddie’s survivors include his wife of nearly 32 years, Barbara Page (Low) Durkin; his cousins: Patti “Pat” Lynn Brown of Mechanicsburg, Jo Ann Fields of Mechanicsburg, Susan Elizabeth Brand of Camp Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Eddie graduated from Morris High School as part of the class of 1946 and from Central Penn Business College with a degree in accounting. He entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Eddie retired in 1985 from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue in Harrisburg, after many of service working as the comptroller. Eddie was a member of the American Legion Post 26 in Dillsburg and several Masonic organizations including: the Eureka – West Shore Lodge No. 302 F&AM in Mechanicsburg, the Harrisburg Consistory and the Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg; and served as past president of the local chapter of the National Association of Accountants. He was an ardent fan of San Francisco Giants baseball and New York Giants football. Eddie and Barbara loved to travel; they spoke especially fondly of their five-week trip out West, visiting the Grand Canyon and seeing Siegfried & Roy’s white tigers. Eddie was a loving husband to Barbara, so much that he was dubbed her “knight in shining armor” throughout their life together.
All are welcome to join Eddie’s family for his virtual gathering of family & friends at 10:45 a.m. until time of his virtual viewing at 11:00 a.m. and casket closing at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2020. Eddie’s in-person gathering of family & friends will be from 11:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:15 p.m., all at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Celebrant George A. Spangler officiating. Eddie’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Entombment will follow the reception in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.
