JoAnn (Sauls) Hess
JoAnn (Sauls) Hess, age 86, most recently of Mechanicsburg, and for most of her life of Hicksville, Long Island, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023. JoAnn was born on Thursday, August 20, 1936, in Hampton, S.C. to the late Joseph Henry Sauls and Lily (Clifton) Sauls. JoAnn was the widow of Roger Roy Hess, whom she met in Beaufort, S.C. and married on April 22, 1957, and who died on April 28, 2007. In addition to her parents and husband, JoAnn is preceded in death by her five sisters: Nell, Marion, Martha, Helen and Molly; and her twin brother, Joe.
JoAnn’s survivors include her three children: Diane Hess Shenstone, Donna Hess Fischetti, Ronald Roy Hess; and three beloved grandchildren: Melissa, David B., and Stephen Fischetti. She is also survived by her cherished niece, Linda (King) Terry of Brunson S.C.
JoAnn was a graduate of Hampton High School in Hampton, S.C. At a very early age she left her family home to work as a secretary for the United States Marine Corps based in Parris Island, Beaufort, S.C. This is where she met Roger, who was serving in the Navy. Little did she realize that he would be “THE LOVE OF HER LIFE” (They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2007). Relinquishing her career, she then devoted her time to becoming a doting wife and loving mother to her children. Together they enjoyed listening and dancing to all of the popular music from the 1950’s and 1960’s. Although moving to N.Y. from S.C., she remained a true southern belle and had never lost her accent. She eventually went back to work and finally retired from Sterns Department Store in Hicksville, N.Y. after many years of dedicated service.
JoAnn was a very feisty woman, never afraid to speak her mind, and share her unique sense of humor. She also inspired so many of us with her great sense of values by attending church, especially at the Christian Life Assembly in Camp Hill. She loved talking to people, adored flowers, and kept active by walking. JoAnn loved to socialize by playing Bingo and going to Atlantic City with her best friend Eleanor. She also enjoyed watching television, especially game shows and “Murder She Wrote”, whereas Angela Lansbury became part of the family. She was a good cook and renowned for her southern fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, ham casserole, “pizza soup”, pecan tarts and her mocha cake. She will be deeply missed, but will continue to live in our hearts forever.
