Joseph S. Meledin Jr.

October 6, 1942 — October 22, 2023

Carlisle

Joseph “Joe” S. Meledin, Jr., age 81, of Carlisle, passed away at Church of God Home in Carlisle on Sunday, October 22, 2023.  Joe was born on Tuesday, October 6, 1942, in Pittsburgh to the late Joseph S. Meledin, Sr. and Anna Agnes (Hrinda) Meledin.

Joe’s survivors include his wife of 57 years, Irene Catherine (Baker) Meledin; his three children: Heather Irene Nash and husband, Joel, of Steelton; Todd Joseph Meledin and wife, Katie, of Harrisburg; and Hollie Ann Hadley and husband, Donald, of Mechanicsburg; his five grandchildren: Connor, Aedan, Lilly, Delaney and Nora; his sister: Patricia “Patty” Kmetz of Irwin; and his several nieces and nephews.

Joe graduated from Munhall High School. He went on to obtain his Bachelor's Degree in History from Duquesne University of Pittsburgh.  He then obtained his Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he then taught as a professor of English.  An avid reader and bookworm, when Joe wasn't browsing the local used book store, he could be found at home in his favorite chair deep in the pages of his latest reading find.  When he wasn't reading, he could be found watching one of the many John Wayne movies he had watched since he was a child. While his Parkinson's disease later in life prevented him from pursuing the hobbies he enjoyed in his youth, he had fond memories of trips to Erie, PA, with his father to go fishing and trips with his family to Cape Cod, MA.  He also enjoyed listening to and singing along with his favorite singers, such as Meatloaf and Neil Diamond.  And Joe also enjoyed telling and hearing a good joke, which always lit his face up in a huge smile.  He will be greatly missed by his family. In Joe's memory, we hope that the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pitt Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins will each make it to their respective playoff games this season.

All are welcome to join Joe’s family at his viewing on Monday, October 30, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral & Cremation, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Celebrant George A. Spangler.  Joe’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service.  Interment in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill will be at the convenience of the family.  Cremation was private.
