Lucille Maxine Bair

May 28, 1937 — October 24, 2025

Mechanicsburg

Lucille “Lucy” Maxine (Sheaffer) Bair, age 88, of Mechanicsburg passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025. Lucy was born on Friday, May 28, 1937, in Churchtown to the late Millard Filmore Sheaffer and Mabel Blanche (Jumper) Sheaffer. Lucy was the widow of Don Alvin Bair, whom she married on April 28, 1956. Don died on April 20, 2023, eight days shy of their 67th wedding anniversary. In addition to her parents and husband, Lucy is preceded in death by her two sons: Richard “Rick” Bair and Don Bair, Jr.; three brothers: Wesley, Harvey and Marlin Sheaffer; and five sisters: Pearl Bretz, Betty Hanes, Ivy Mahoney, Dorothy Hill and Florence Wiley.

Lucy’s survivors include: her daughter: Crystal L. Hull and husband, Mark, of Silver Spring Township; her three grandchildren: Tucker R. Hull and wife, Kandice; Ashley L. Cunningham and husband, Johnny; and Don A. Bair, III and wife, Emma; her two great-grandchildren: Cooper and Eleanor; and many beloved nieces and nephews across the country.

Lucy was hard-working and enjoyed serving the public. Prior to her retirement, she worked for decades as a waitress in several upscale restaurants in Harrisburg serving many governors, legislators and other elected officials who specifically requested Lucy, along with sports figures and movie stars.

Just like her daddy, how she referenced her father who died a few weeks after her 30th birthday, Lucy was a life-long Phillies fan. She also followed the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State football. During her children's school years, Lucy could be found on the bleachers cheering on her sons during Mechanicsburg wrestling matches and on her folding chair on the sidelines of her daughter's softball and field hockey games. While she remained relatively quiet during her daughter's games, at times she became quite excited with calls made by wrestling officials. Lucy's love of sports continued as she cheered her grandchildren in youth baseball and then during soccer and football games when they were in high school and college.

Lucy was known for her love of baking, especially her carrot cake, pumpkin rolls and sand tarts. She enjoyed working in her garden, crocheting and arts & crafts all while working full-time from the time her youngest child was six months old. She was proud of her home and people said you could "eat dinner off her floors". She was a meticulous housekeeper until her health failed and she and Don moved to Bethany Village.

Lucy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Shiremanstown for more than 60 years where she was active in the Altar Guild and had her regular seat in the third pew from the front. Lucy was an honorary member of the Mechanicsburg Class of 1955. Through hard work and perseverance she completed the Adult High School Diploma Program at Cumberland Valley High School at the age of 55, earning her the right to wear a cap & gown just like the other members of the CV Class of '92.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. in the Bethany Village Assisted Living (Door 21), first floor Education Room, 5225 Wilson Lane, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Brand Eaton officiating.
