Great Storyteller and Conversationalist -

Robert “Andy” George Gump, age 85, of Mechanicsburg, passed away with his loving family by his side on Saturday, September 28, 2019.  Andy was born on Thursday, May 10, 1934 in Huntingdon to the late William Archie Gump and Blanche Seamon (Mills) Gump.  Andy was the widower of Joanne (Ashton) Gump, whom he married on July 31, 1954, and who died on July 10, 2007.  In addition to his parents and wife, Andy is preceded in death by his brother, Donald Gump.

Andy’s survivors include his companion, Bernice Fields of Tyrone; his five children: Karen Hartman and her husband, Kenneth, of Mechanicsburg, Jeffrey “Jeff” Gump of Mechanicsburg, Steven “Steve” Gump and his wife, Darlene, of Camp Hill, Holly Wilbur and her husband, Jeffrey, of Mechanicsburg, Bobbie Failor and her husband, Gene, of Marysville; his 15 grandchildren: Robert Hartman and his wife, Jennifer, Ryan Hartman, Kenneth Hartman, Jr. and his wife, Kelly, Cheryl Hartman, Zachary Gump, Megan Gump, Danielle Gipe and her husband, Jeremy, Katelynn Deimler and her husband, Dwayne, Steven Gump, Joshua Wilbur and his wife, Samantha, Brianna Stevenson and her husband, Justin, Colton Wilbur, Alec Failor, Joshua Failor, Parker Failor; his 16 great-grandchildren; his two sister-in-laws: Mary Mitchell of Altoona, Lucy Breslin and her husband, Tom, of Warsaw, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

Andy graduated from Huntingdon High School as part of the class of 1953.  He retired from the Borough of Mechanicsburg Sewer Authority, after 12 years of service working as a general laborer.  Andy also worked for Youngstown Cartage for 40 years as a truck driver.  He was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg.  Andy was an honorary retired member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters AFL-CIO.  He loved camping, attending Bluegrass festivals, watching western movies, and listening to country music.  Andy was an avid Penn State University and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.  He was a great storyteller and conversationalist that could talk to anyone and was always providing humor.  Andy most enjoyed spending time with his family and watching as his grandchildren grew up.

All are welcome to join Andy’s family on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at his open house with food and fellowship starting at 1:00 p.m., with his memorial service to begin at 3:00 p.m., all at Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Ronald O’Neil officiating.  The family invites everyone to dress casually and comfortably.  Cremation was private.
