Ross Walter Hoverter, III
An Avid Outdoorsman -
Ross Walter Hoverter, III, age 81, of Camp Hill, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2022. Ross was born on Tuesday, June 4, 1940, in Harrisburg to the late Ross Walter Hoverter, Jr. and Beatrice Fern (Swanger) Hoverter. In addition to his parents, Ross is preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Marie (Stevens) Hoverter, whom he married in November 1962, and who passed away on February 27, 1993.
Ross’s survivors include his wife of 20 years, Rita Mary (Ward) Hoverter; his five children: Heidi Ann Walters of Mechanicsburg, Charles Ross Hoverter and wife, Jody, of Gardners, Jennifer Lynn Clark of Carlisle, Sean Robert Forsythe and companion, Carol Wheeler, of Mechanicsburg, Mary “Terri” Therese Boris of Mechanicsburg; his ten grandchildren: Austin Walters, Allison Walters, Zachary Hoverter, David Clark, Jr., Claire Clark, Tyler Clark, Chenoa Miller, Patrick Miller, Devin Forysthe, Nicholas Hicks; his eight great-grandchildren: Sveah Clark, London Elleby, Gia Elleby, Neveah Clark, Luna Broome, Aurora Blase, Salem Blase, Tyke Walters; and his beloved canine companion, Freya.
Ross served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired from Weis Markets, where he filled many roles from stock boy to manager, for more than 40 years. In his younger years, Ross was a member of Pine Street Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, where he sang in the children’s choir and he was currently attending Turning Point Church in Mechanicsburg. He was also a member of the Carlisle Fish & Game Association. Ross was proud to serve the community of Mechanicsburg as a volunteer firefighter for over 50 years; first with Mechanicsburg Hook and Ladder, then Citizens Fire Company and also Washington Fire Company. He served as a Fire Policeman and worked as security for Mechanicsburg High School Football games as well. Even when not attending as a security guard, he loved to watch the Mechanicsburg High School Football team play. Ross was also a devoted fan of the Chicago Bears. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt deer and small game; fish the Yellow Breeches Creek for Trout; camp in a tent with his family; and hit the links at local golf courses. Ross’s passion was for model trains. He spent many hours collecting HO and N gauge model trains. He created beautiful landscapes and buildings to enhance his train collection. Ross enjoyed taking his family on long drives and day trips to many locations including the New England states and to the beach. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
All are welcome to join Ross’s family his viewing on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend George A. Spangler officiating. Ross’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Over 100 parking spaces are available; just look for the “Buhrig” parking signs in all of our parking lots. Burial will follow the reception in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.
