Susan Gail (Olson) Henderson, age 77, of Mechanicsburg, passed away at home and surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Susan was born on Sunday, February 20, 1949, in Yakima, Washington to the late James P. Olson and Doris (Long) Olson. In addition to her parents, Susan is preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Olson.
Susan’s survivors include her husband of 46 years, Clifton "Cliff" Herbert Henderson; her two sons: Brian Henderson and wife, Nicole, of Harrisburg and Matthew Henderson of Mechanicsburg; her granddaughter: Hazel Henderson; her step-son: Richard Henderson and wife Christie, of Rohnert Park, CA; her step-granddaughter: Grace Henderson; her three siblings: James "Jim" Olson and wife, Kelly, of Malaga, WA; Jean Meyers of Yakima, Washington; Sally Abshire and husband, Roy, of Greenacres, WA; and several nieces and nephews.
Susan graduated from West Valley High School as part of the class of 1967 and from Central Washington University in 1971. Susan retired from the Harrisburg School District. Her calling as an educator saw her teaching in many different schools and districts across the country, but it was her deep commitment to her students—often in inner city environments—that truly defined her career.
She was happiest on her oceanfront balcony in Ocean City, Maryland, listening to the crashing waves and watching the ocean roll in. Nothing beat a day out on the water for her, whether she was cruising on a boat, exploring the wild beauty of Alaska, or gathering family around the table for a seafood feast.
A proud sports fan through and through, she loved cheering loudly for the Seattle Seahawks and tracking every inning with the Philadelphia Phillies. Whether she was wearing her team colors, keeping up with the scores, or watching a big game from the local bar, her enthusiasm was felt by those around her.
She will be deeply missed by her family and the countless people whose lives she touched. Her infectious laugh could light up any room, and her quick wit and warm company made everyone feel right at home.
A Celebration of Susan's Life will be held Saturday August 29th starting at 2pm at the Mechanicsburg Club- 333 Heinz St. Mechanicsburg, PA 17050.
