William “Bill” Kitch Sponsler, 104, of Mechanicsburg died Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at Messiah Village shortly after having enjoyed a meal with friends. He was born on Wednesday, May 15, 1907 in South Middleton Township the son of the late Frank S. and Ida Cora (Kitch) Sponsler. Bill was the widower of Charlotte S. (Stare) Sponsler.

Bill was a long-time member of Shepherdstown United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg and he retired from Locust Point Quarries, Mechanicsburg. He loved sewing cancer dressings which he did for many years. Bill was an avid billiard player and enjoyed working in the wood shop. He remained alert and mentally sharp and he was well liked by the staff at Messiah Village where he lived for the past 22 years.

Bill’s survivors include three nieces: Lois A. (Sponsler) May of Dillsburg, Ida M. Sponsler of Dillsburg, Barbara (Sponsler) Ingle of New Oxford; and one nephew: Ronald C. Eckerd of Mechanicsburg. In addition to his wife, Bill was preceded in death by one sister: N. Ruth Sponsler; two brothers: Joel Smith Sponsler, Elmer William Sponsler; and one niece: Gladys M. (Sponsler) Watts.

All are welcome to join Bill’s family at his viewing on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, from 9:00 until time of service at 10:00 at Shepherdstown United Methodist Church , 1934 South York Street, Mechanicsburg, PA, 17055 with Pastor Donald J. Ciampa officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Bill’s family invites everyone to join them for a Time of Food and Fellowship at his church on Tuesday following the burial.

The family suggests memorial contributions to: Shepherdstown United Methodist Church Building Fund.
