Always Remained Kind & Generous -

Douglas “Skip” Durrall Skipworth, age 90, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Upper Marlboro, MD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Skip was born on Thursday, August 27, 1931, in Anadarko, OK to the late Ernest Richard Skipworth and Mattie (Edwards) Skipworth. Skip was the widower of Norma (Tyldesley) Skipworth, whom he married on January 22, 1953, and who died on November 10, 2010. In addition to his parents and wife, Skip is preceded in death by his two brothers: Percy Skipworth and Billy Skipworth; and his sister, Shirley Skipworth.

Skip’s survivors include his two sons: Michael D. Skipworth and wife, Carol, of Mechanicsburg, Douglas R. Skipworth of FL; his three granddaughters: Gail Brown, Mikayla Skipworth and Kayleigh Skipworth; his two great-grandsons: Michael and Matthew; his sister, Peggy Skipworth of OK; and several nieces and nephews.

Skip proudly served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. He was a part of the Japanese Occupation Force after World War II and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During the Vietnam War, Skip was stationed in Thailand. He retired from the Air Force and after returning to work as a civilian, retired from Andrews Air Force Base. As a farm boy born in Oklahoma, Skip was never a “city guy”. He coveted the country life, and was greatly fond of the outdoors and bird hunting. All animals loved him, especially dogs, which earned him the title of “Dog Whisperer”. Skip liked to work on cars with his sons and thoroughly enjoyed spending his retirement with his granddaughters. He was a very patient man who never lost his temper; he always remained kind and generous. Skip deeply loved his wife and often referred to Norma and himself as a “proper British girl” and a “plain country boy”.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, February 28, 2022 in Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD beginning at 1:00 p.m; with Reverend James E. Chance officiating. Masks are required at the cemetery. Cremation was private.
