Richard “Dick” Lewis Barrick, age 93, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully at home and surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, February 2, 2021.  Richard was born on Monday, July 4, 1927, to the late Ellis Barrick and Bertha Chloe (Marquart) Barrick.  In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his seven brothers and two sisters.

Richard’s survivors include his wife of 66 years, Charlotte (Snyder) Barrick; his two daughters: Nancy Stout of Mechanicsburg, and Beth Handzel and husband Steven of West Chester; his two local granddaughters:  Kristen Brinkman and husband Clifford of New Cumberland, Jessica Stout and partner Amanda Miller of Mechanicsburg; his three adopted grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; his brother Glen Barrick and sister Evelyn Hetrick.

Richard graduated from Boiling Springs High School as part of the class of 1944 and from Gettysburg College in 1952. Richard was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He flew for and was a past commander of the Civil Air Patrol, having earned his pilot license at age 16.   Richard retired from Allstate Insurance in 1984, after over 30 years of service working as a manager. He was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg, where he formerly served as a trustee.  Richard loved the outdoors. Over a span of three years, he hiked the entire Appalachian Trail.  For over 10 years, until he was 90, Richard maintained a ten-mile stretch of the Trail.  He loved to travel and camp throughout Canada and the United States; and he visited all 50 U.S. states.  Richard loved to fish in salt water, creeks, and rivers; his favorite catch was bass.  He did not care much for the beach himself, but loved sitting on the beach with his granddaughters and beloved wife.

All are welcome to join Richard’s family at his gathering of family and friends in person on Thursday, February 11, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:15 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and for his virtual gathering of family and friends and service via video chat or telephone beginning at 9:30 a.m.; with Reverend Steven Handzel officiating.  Richard’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service.  Burial will follow the reception in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA, where military honors will be presented.
