Terry Lee Hertzler, Sr.

Terry Lee Hertzler, Sr., age 72, of Dillsburg (formerly Mechanicsburg), passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by his loving family on June 2nd, 2021 after battling the effects of Agent Orange and Asbestosis.  Terry was born on Wednesday, November 24, 1948 in Mechanicsburg to the late Joseph G. Hertzler and Jeanne L. (Enck) Hertzler.

Terry’s survivors include his wife of 42 years, Christine “Chris” (Vater); his two children: Jill Hertzler of Mechanicsburg, Terry Jr. (TJ) Hertzler and wife, Hali, of Boiling Springs; his siblings: Jeffrey Hertzler, Bruce & Connie (Hertzler) Smith; his in-laws & their spouses: Arthur & Claudia Vater; Douglas & Diane (Vater) Bender; Mark Vater; and Annette (Vater) Smith; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Terry graduated from Mechanicsburg Area High School as part of the class of 1966.  He enlisted in the Army and was in the Vietnam War from 1969-1970.  After being discharged with rank of Sgt. E5, he worked as a union insulation installer specialist, then was appointed State Adjutant of the VFW, and then was appointed Director of the VHIC (Vietnam Veterans Herbicide Information Commission) under former Governor Dick Thornburgh from 1982-1988.  After spending a few years in Buffalo, NY, Terry and his family moved back to Mechanicsburg.  Terry retired from the Department of Health in 2009.

Terry was a member of Mechanicsburg Brethren In Christ Church (McBic) and took part in the Berean Fellowship class along with participating in the Men’s Bible Study.  He was a member of Mechanicsburg VFW Post 6704 including their color guard, Mechanicsburg American Legion Post #109, Wounded Warrior Project, Westshoremen Drum & Bugle Corp, Vietnam War Veterans, and Veterans Council of Mechanicsburg.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, listening to music, reading, watching sports and cheering for his Philadelphia sports teams as well as attending Hershey Bears games.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Terry’s name to Mechanicsburg VFW Post 6704, Mechanicsburg Brethren In Christ Church, New Hope Ministries of Mechanicsburg, or Asana Hospice Care.

All are welcome to join Terry’s family at his viewing on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a service beginning at 10:45 a.m. all at Mechanicsburg Brethren in Christ Church, 1050 South York Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor John King officiating.  Terry’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church immediately following the service.  Burial will follow the reception in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented.
